5 Ways Therapy Can Help You

by Carlene Lehmann, M.A., LMFT

Are you feeling stuck, frustrated, or overwhelmed? Would you like more cooperation in your relationship?

You’ve come to the right place. There are many reasons to seek therapy. We understand that seeking support doesn’t feel comfortable for everyone. It can be difficult to trust a person and be vulnerable with them. Know that it is possible to find a therapist you can trust and can be a support.

When selecting a therapist, it is important to find one that you have a good fit with. Someone who you can trust, who listens, and guides you to determine what works for you. It can be helpful to interview several therapists before picking one. Many therapists offer a free phone consultation where you can ask questions and understand how they work with clients.

Here are five ways therapy can benefit you-

  • Helps you identify your blind spots

We all have blind spots. Blind spots are those areas of our life or qualities we possess that are getting in our way and difficult for us to see on our own. A therapist can provide a different perspective to our struggles and help us see solutions that we might not otherwise recognize. It is a strength to seek more awareness of ourselves and our behavior. It helps us understand more about who we are and why we do the things we do.

  • Helps normalize your problems

It allows you to know you are not alone and the only one experiencing these issues. We all need to know we belong. It is common for clients to want to know if what they are experiencing is normal and that there are solutions. The answer is to both of these questions is usually “Yes”. You are not “crazy”. You are going through an intense time. Seeking support during struggles is what we are wired to do as humans.

  • Helps you develop a narrative

If we have experienced abuse, loss of loved one, or a significant change in our life we may not have had the opportunity to process them or make sense of them. It can leave us experiencing overwhelm and confusion. Through the therapeutic process, you can begin to sort through your life and develop a narrative that empowers you instead of draining you. You can change your story from “needing other’s approval” to “living your life and making decisions that reflect who you are and what you value”. change same

  • Make changes in your life

You would like to make a life change, but are having trouble taking action. Change can be hard as we are wired to seek routine and security. A therapist can help you identify the obstacles in your path. It can also help you get clear if the way you currently spend your time and energy is in alignment with your goals and values.

  • Gives you hope

We need to know there is hope. Hope is defined as “a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen”. We need to know when stressful periods of life come that it will get better. A therapist who has been through their own struggles and come through them will be able to understand and relate to what you are feeling. Your experience is your own and they can help you see that the light is at the end of the tunnel.
