Depression Counseling- Frequently Asked Questions
Do I really need counseling?
Depression is not the same as sadness or grief, which usually result from loss. While they may cause somewhat similar feelings, counseling for depression can help you identify the causes of your emotions and process them appropriately. We can get stuck in patterns that can prolong and intensify our feelings of sadness and hopeless. It can be helpful to get a professional’s perspective as it is hard to see our way out on our own.
If you determine that your depression is actually grief or sadness, our therapists can help you recover from that too.

How can counseling help me with my depression?
Often when we are experiencing depression, we tend to isolate ourselves. Counseling can give you a safe and comforting place to talk about what it going on and that’s all about supporting you. Unlike social situations, you don’t have to worry about keeping up appearances. You can feel free to be vulnerable and let out all that you’ve been holding in. We understand and are here to listen.
We can help you recognize unhelpful thinking patterns, assess their validity and engage in alternative and healthier ways of thinking so you can start to feel better.
Do I have to take medication or will you make me?
We are here to support you. We work in partnership with you and would never make you do anything. We want to create a safe place where trust is a priority. We are happy to discuss if medications might help you, but we will also honor if you do not want to pursue this option. We honor your boundaries around this issue. You have a voice in your counseling and we want you to let us know what you are and are not comfortable with.
If you are wondering and have questions about medications, we are happy to discuss this with you. We are counselors and are not licensed to prescribe medications, but we are happy to give you referrals for those who can-psychiatrists and primary care physicians.
“That’s the thing about depression: A human being can survive almost anything, as long as she sees the end in sight. But depression is so insidious—and it compounds daily—making it impossible to ever see the end. That fog is like a cage without a key.” -Elizabeth Wurtzel
