At Relationships Matter Therapy- Austin, our licensed counselors can help you transition into adulthood feeling confident and empowered.
Would you like help navigating the relationship with your parents?
Are you struggling to find meaning in this new stage of life and can’t seem to identify what is important to you going forward?
Do you need support in creating your identity- the values, career, and relationships that makes sense for you?
Are you experiencing a major life transition and feel lost about which options are best for you?
Overnight it seems like you’re expected to know exactly what to do with your life.
But young adulthood isn’t the same as it was when your parents were your age. There are so many different challenges and navigating this new reality can feel pretty tough.

Getting a job, making your own schedule, and calling your own shots sounded glorious. It meant that all the time and energy you’d spent as a kid growing up would finally start to pay off. Or that all of that rebellious time you had in your teen years would put you ahead of the game as an adult.
But as you got closer to this milestone it became obvious that adulthood isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. You feel confused by all the responsibilities and forgot about all the benefits of finally being the person in charge. Suddenly, life turned into paying bills, finding the right relationships, and making a name for yourself.
Now you find yourself stressed out and frustrated.
There is so much pressure that comes with being an adult that it is hard to remember who you are underneath everything that is expected of you. You try to do your best, but it feels like whenever you try, you butt up against another thing to master.
You’re not wanting to blame the world for your struggles. You knew making it on your own would be a transition and that there would be ups and downs. But you didn’t expect to have a hard time making friends and keeping them. You never thought dating and being romantic would be so difficult, and you certainly didn’t expect to have such a challenge succeeding.
At Relationships Matter Therapy- Austin, we help young adults who are dealing with a range of issues such as navigating the dating world, career fulfillment, healing from unhealthy relationships or difficult breakups, codependency, family dynamics, stress and anxiety, perfectionism, and more.
When you’re honest with yourself, you’re getting by right now, but you know adulthood could be so much better.

Young Adult Counseling- Frequently Asked Questions
Counseling for young adult adjustment issues isn’t cheap. I’m not sure it’s worthwhile. Plus, between work and class I have very limited availability. How can I find time for therapy?
It’s true that counseling for young adult adjustment issues is an investment. However, self-doubt, anxiety, depression, stress and perhaps substance abuse due to young adult adjustment issues can impact your productivity at work or school, your relationships with friends and family and even important decisions about your future. By investing in yourself now, you are not only creating the opportunity to feel better sooner, but you are also protecting other areas in your life that can suffer when you’re not feeling well.
Our clinicians understand that your time is valuable. To ease scheduling conflicts we offer evening and weekend appointments as well as online sessions when time is really tight.
My parents will be helping me pay for therapy sessions. Does this mean they have access to my private information?
No, any confidential information you share with your counselor will be kept private according to the law and our code of ethics.

I’m afraid that counseling will shine light on my problems and make me feel even worse.
Counseling will not make anything worse. What it will do, however, is make you more aware of what’s not working in your life. This awareness can sometimes be painful, but sifting and sorting through that pain is a necessary step for learning about yourself and moving forward.
Your therapist can help you identify self-limiting beliefs, offer practical and thoughtful feedback, and gently push you in ways that you may not be able to push yourself. We can also can help you discover new perspectives, creative solutions, highlight your progress and remind you to breathe. Working through your issues now can bring relief to your life sooner, as well as help to improve your confidence and ability to handle stress and conflict.
It takes courage to face our challenges, and although it may feel more comfortable (in the short run) to hide, it is much more rewarding to face your challenges and overcome them. Your therapist will be there to coach you through trials and push you in ways that you cannot push yourself. Your therapist can also highlight and celebrate your successes.
“Decide in your heart of hearts what really excites and challenges you, and start moving your life in that direction. Every decision you make, from what you eat to what you do with your time tonight, turns you into who you are tomorrow, and the day after that. Look at who you want to be, and start sculpting yourself into that person. You may not get exactly where you thought you’d be, but you will be doing things that suit you in a profession you believe in. Don’t let life randomly kick you into the adult you don’t want to become.” – Chris Hadfield
